Scrub Ridge Trail is a mile-long loop on the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge that takes about 40 minutes to explore.
The trail begins wide and sandy, cutting through the scrub that is home to endangered gopher tortoises, indigo snakes, and Florida scrub jays.
The rustling you hear in the scrub could also be from armadillos or other birds.
On the second half, trail separates the scrub from a freshwater impoundment, where you can see shorebirds.
