Maybe it is a coincidence, but 38 stars adorn the American Flag With Eagle sterling silver and enamel spoon. In the bowl, a laurel could obscure other stars, but we count 38 stars on the top of the handle. Colorado became the 38th state in 1876 and star added to the actual American flag in 1877. In 1889, both Dakotas, Montana and Washington joined the union. According to marks on the back of the handle of the spoon, the maker is J. Tostrup. Jacob Ulrich Holfeldt Tostrup of Oslo. In 1832, he founded the jewelers firm J. Tostrup, and he was considered one of the most important spoon makers in Norway. Tostrup died in 1890.
